Love Lost, 2023

Love Lost, 2023, is an immersive installation that includes space, smell, sound, photography, sculpture, readymade, artist book, video, and time.

“Love Lost” is an emotional response to toxic love. It is trapped, and controlled, but when you decide to leave, you feel your dependence and intense reluctance.
The attachment of the ropes represents the constraint in the relationship from external to internal, which contradicts bonding.

Imagining you are walking in...

This is the third piece from the

“Man No Tears, 2020” ceramic

sculptural vase series.

Everyone or man is not ashamed

to cry at the funeral or cry at their

own funeral. All gender rules,

societal expectations, our own

rules, and our expectations will be

all gone until we die. Then we may

realize life is short, and start to

think about “I really should take a

risk, break a rule, do whatever I

want, but why didn’t I do that?”

In the Love Lost installation

setting, the meaning is slightly

changed into life too short, what

we need to experience is an

experience that we are meant to

experience. Without any regrets in

loving someone, even loving in

pain;  too shall pass.

touch to open the book

Little Blue Book (Lost Lookbook)

It collects the feelings about

crush, regret, love, desire, and

reconsideration about living every

day as the last day before the

doomsday.

Poetry and photographs are

written and taken during that

current time frame.

Rethinking about all the

connections between humans,

having a crush on someone,

lover, friend. If tomorrow is the

end of the world, what would I do

differently? if there is another

parallel space, what would I say

differently? There is no if - we

should do whatever we want

without any regret.

Readymade (Smoked Cigarettes)

Whenever I feel depressed,

I will smoke cigarettes. I think

smoking is similar to deep

breathing exercises.

At least just one minute, take me

away from everything that I am

feeling despair to fix.

These cigarettes leftover are

collected after every time I smoke

to ease my emotions.

Smell...🚬

The two photo series both represent the external and internal

feelings in the relationship, which is apparently peaceful and

harmonious, but internally trapped and constrained.

It was an intuitive decision to display the photo as a crucifix.

This is the best representation of God’s unconditional love,

sacrifice, and redemption. When this meaning applies to the

Love Lost installation, it automatically becomes a ceremony

about love and loss. The crucifix enhances the torment and

sacrifice of toxic love, shows the opposite side of

unconditional love, but also the death for extrication.

Love Lost performance

Performance: Avery Wei

Sound: Tian Ai Guo

Direct and created by Yan Liang

I believe marriage is the highest praise for love, thus, I chose to

dress her as a bride. In the “Love is an unpredictable madness”

video, I allow Avery to perform her free will, and the table becomes

her playground. After her performance, each still life that she

interacted with became a symbolic object. It enhances Vanita's idea

from historical still life painting into video. Everything on the screen

love, body, and still life is the transience of life.

I think every time there is disappointment in my relationship, my

rose petals will fall, but after I will try to communicate our problem

or convince myself that everything will be fine. The peeling and

reversing rose happening at the same time represent the effort it

takes in the uncertainty stage.

A coincidence fact happening in the installation is that the roses’s

petals fall naturally every day, and the school cleaner will help me

clean the floor every day. This spontaneous happening echoes

Avery’s peeling and reversing rose to action.

Love Lost rose installation

Time plays an inevitable role in the rose's

blossoming and decay representing love

starting with beauty and sweetness, but

changing negatively through time.

Pick a rose to burn,
We burn pain together.
